About Us

There is a street corner in Orakei that has watched a hundred goodbyes and a thousand hellos, and on it stands a door that was never meant to be just a door — it was meant to be an invitation. Long before it was anything else, this building held a different kind of fire: an old gin distillery, the kind local legend still speaks of, where Gordon's Gin is said to have once been made behind these very walls. The spirit changed. The soul of the place never did.

Orakei Local was not built by people chasing a trend. It was built by a table — the long, loud, endless kind, where chairs get dragged in from other rooms because someone else has just turned up, where the wine never seems to run dry, and where nobody, ever, is in a hurry to leave. Orakei Local is simply that memory, built at last into a room big enough to hold everyone who walks through the door — a room that once distilled spirit by the barrel, and now pours beer by the endless glass.

This is European kitchen, New Zealand pantry — the discipline and soul of old-world cooking, built from what this land gives generously: the fish from these waters, the greens from these hills, the produce grown an hour from where you’re sitting. Nothing borrowed that doesn’t need to be. Everything else, entirely its own.

The name was never an accident. Not a bar. Not a restaurant. A local — the kind of place a neighbourhood quietly claims as its own, where the same faces return and a stranger becomes a regular within a handful of visits. Every plate that leaves this kitchen, every glass poured across this bar, carries the same quiet promise: that years, loves and glasses of wine are never counted here. Come as a stranger. Leave as family. We are your new local.
